Konovalenko’s dynamic and theatrical sculptures stand alone in the gem-carving world. Alexander Panin has argued that Konovalenko did more than simply resuscitate the dormant genre of Russian gem carving; he invented a new form entirely (quoted in Federov 1994:66).

Konovalenko: Stories in Stone is the first feature-length documentary about the life, art and times of Ukrainian-Russian gem sculptor, Vasily Konovalenko. Tracing Russian/Soviet/Cold-War history through one man’s story, the film will provide viewers with a better understanding of the fabric of the Russian national identity and worldview.

I was fortunate to see his gem stone sculptures at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Dr. Steve Nash is an archaeologist, columnist, historian of science, and stand-up comedian. He is currently studying the Mogollon archaeology of southwestern New Mexico, Indian peace medals in the Museum’s Crane Collection, and the enchanting Russian gem carving sculptures of Vasily Konovalenko. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition “Vasily Konovalenko: A Sculptor of Gems”.

Vasily Konovalenko (koh-noh-vuh-len-koh) was born in 1929 in Petrivka, Ukraine (just north of the Black Sea).
