The Foraminifera.eu-Project wants to foster the interest in foraminifera. Avocational to professional scientists shall get a free platform where they find valuable information and may show off their results. We build a free accessible webpage on foraminifera based on a well structured image-database and easy-to-use interfaces.

Foraminiferan, any unicellular organism of the rhizopodan order Foraminiferida (formerly Foraminifera), characterized by long, fine pseudopodia that extend from a uninucleated or multinucleated cytoplasmic body encased within a test, or shell. Their shells are also referred to as tests because in some forms the protoplasm covers the exterior of the shell.

2015-10-28 · Foraminifera are single-celled organisms that live in the ocean. They have shells that are easily affected by changes in ocean chemistry. There are about 4000 different species of so-called “formas”. Only 52 species are planktonic – floating in the water. All other are benthic species, which means that they are living at the seabed.

Foraminifera or forams, as they are called, are an important group of tiny single-celled rhizarian eukaryotes. They are mostly marine, though a few live in fresh-water, and even on damp land areas. In the sea, they live both in the plankton (pelagic), and in the deeper water (the benthos).

Typically, Benthic Foraminifera are bottom dwellers and thus reside at the seafloor. Here, they can be found in such habitats as marshes and abyssal plains where they move about and feed using their pseudopodia. The Foraminifera are in fact protected by a pseudo chitinous or gelatinous shell, cemented by foreign materials, or formed by calcium carbonate under form of calcite (CaCO 3). Most of them, called Politalamii , have a calcareous shell formed by several chambers. The Foraminifera ("Hole Bearers") represent a group of amoeba-related protozoa that produce a test (shell) which can have either one or multiple chambers, and in some cases can be extremely complex.
